Archer Transformer question of the day

Question Should i be getting continiuty with balun?
I have been having trouble getting a signal from an old 4 bay antenna so i took it down to take a look at it. I took off the balun and ran a continuity test on it and im not getting a beep from threaded grounded coax end to either ribbon lead wire (with u shaped connections) on other end. Nor am i getting continuity from positive end to either ribbon lead wire. However i am getting continuity when i test from lead wire to lead wire...both ends that connect to the antenna. The balun/transformer doesnt have anything printed on it except the word "archer". So would this be normal for this type of balun? thank you

Best Answer Yes, the balun will read as a short with a meter if you put the leads across the two input or output terminals. The reason for this is that there is a transformer inside that. It will look like a short to your meter across the input or output but it should read much higher ohms from input to output.
Question Continuity from balun?
I have been having trouble getting a signal from an old outside 4 bay tv antenna so i took it down to take a look at it. I took off the balun and ran a continuity test on it and im not getting a beep from threaded grounded coax end to either ribbon lead wire (with u shaped connections) on other end. Nor am i getting continuity from positive end to either ribbon lead wire. So im not getting continuity from input to output on the balun, with a typical multimeter. Is the balun defective? However i am getting continuity when i test from lead wire to lead wire...both ends that connect to the antenna. The balun/transformer doesnt have anything printed on it except the word "archer". So would this be normal for this type of balun? Or is it defective? Just not sure if its just old or if this is typical for this type of balun. thank you

Best Answer Most likely the balun is configured as a step down transformer with the ribbon end the primary and the coax end the secondary. If so the primary and secondary are isolated from each other. Therefore there would be no continuity between the ribbon cable end and the coax end.So its probably okay. The primary end will have twice the number of turns compared to the secondary end. This drops the voltage by a 1/2 and doubles the current. The net effect is to drop the ribbon cable ends 300 ohm impedance to 75 ohms for the secondary coax cable end.
