Question Vintage audio question - - - Marantz?
I am interested in purchasing a vintage receiver. I have found a Marantz 2226 that is gorgeous. Problem is, I don't know anything about vintage receivers. I have 2 new yamaha surround receivers for home theater, but I just bought an eames lounge chair and I want to set up a vintage room. Everyone keeps telling me that the vintage stuff will blow me away. My question is, are they right? Is vintage better than new technology? For this setup, I will probably only hook up my ipod and possibly a cd player, so what would be my best way to go? I love the style of this Marantz, but it only has 26 watts. The room is fairly small so I'm not sure wattage will matter. I am soooo confused !!! I'm not 100% sure on what speakers I will be hooking up here either. I have an unused pair of JBL nd310s that I might use for now. But I am thinking of getting some good Grado headphones too. I don't know. What a mess !!!!!!! Sorry I'm all over the place here. What is your advice ??
Best Answer As Ducksoup said most likely when someone says vintage they are referring to tube. Most audio enthusists would frown upon your IPOD, as keeping the signal in the analog domain is keeping the music to it's truest form. Depending on the quality of the D/A of the CD or IPOD you choose will make a difference in the output you hear. Having said that the best way to pick out equipment is based on how it sounds to your ears. A/B several setups.

Many vintage receivers amps, speakers, turntables, tube checkers, and unusual items found at estate sale. Some of the items were not in the best of condition, and largely over priced. There were some new JBL & Altec 15" woofers s, still in the boxes I missed on my first trip. Nothing was organized before the sale, very difficult to see and inspect in the dark garage. This was in an expensive secluded area and I wasn't sure what to expect. I wish the people that handled the sale would have at least organized it just a little and provided descent lighting in the garage. Things were piled and stacked everywhere. People were crawling under tables in the dark dragging out boxes of stuff. I found two old Viking of Minnesota tape decks hid under a table in the corner. One guy found a Garrard type A, two Altec 50 watt amps, and a Rek o Kut turntable buried that I didn't see. They were priced cheaper than the others and he bought them all.

And usually keep in mind to look at rates. Don’t get used benefit of by having to pay a lot more than the merchandise is value! Classic gear is not unusual more than enough to interrupt the financial institution on, unless of course you just arrive across some thing super uncommon. Question I want to play my ipod through my vintage receiver... Which product should I buy?
My Technics SA 200 receiver is from the 80s... These two products were recommended to me as a way to hook up my ipod (and other mp3 players) to my receiver. Product A - PocketDock Line Out USB - sells for plus shipping through Amazon. Product B - Belkin Audio Y Cable Splitter 1-Mini Plug/2-RCA Plugs (6ft) - sells for about .50 plus shipping through Amazon. The Product A claims to have great sound but is a lot more expensive than the second. I don't need it to be very portable... Just plan to keep it hooked up to the receiver. Will Product A work with a Cowon D2? BTW - if I get this to work I suppose I can get rid of my CD changer that we never use. Wonder how much of a market there is for CD changers from the 90s...
Best Answer The major allure of the MP3 format is you get relatively good sound out of a very small (compressed) file. The way this is accomplished is by shaving off some of both the high and low end of the audio spectrum during the compression process. See this wikki page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP3 for more information about MP3 technology. That being said, the perception of "sound quality" is a purely subjective issue. So, in answer to you query about connecting an iPod to you Technics SA 200, my recommendation is for you NOT to get too hung up on the concept of sound quality. Meaning, using a more expensive cable will NOT render better sound quality as it has already been compromised. Save yourself some money and just use the "Y" cable to connect your iPod via the headphone jack as it will likely render sound that is just as good as using the more expensive type of cable that connects via the multi pin port on the bottom. BTW, Radio Shack stocks both of these types of cables and has a rather liberal return policy, so you may want to consider comparing the sound quality of both cables for yourself and then just keep the one you like best.

Classic loudspeakers are wonderful. Especially if your browsing for superior efficiency speaker systems, full range loudspeakers, or Alnico speakers. Make sure you confirm that the loudspeakers in doing work ailment, because they tend to be incredibly tough to restore. When your obtaining classic I might not be concerned about cabinet blemishes because they should not affect sound. Many declare that turntables present the best representation of audio. If you can get your fingers on them, reel to reel players and tape are incredible. Manufacturers to look for are Teac, Pioneer and Sony. Question Can I connect a CD player to an older/vintage stereo receiver?
I've got an old Sherwood stereo reciever/amp and I was wondering if you could run a modern CD player through it. I already run my turntable through it (Phono inputs), next to the Phono's theres 3 other inputs: Aux, Tape & Rec. Out. What do you think?? Also, there's a headphone input on the front. Care to explain?
Best Answer Whaddya mean old! I thought you were talking about a gramophone! The AUX ( or auxilliary) input is the socket you'd plug the output from your CD-Player into. You may require a specialised lead to connect - it might be a standard 3.5mm jack plug or bi-wire audio cable (or a combination of the two). A pic of the cables I'm thinking of: http://www.uxsight.com/product/41584/audio-cable-leads-35mm-rca-hifi-black.html These are fairly easy to come by for a few pounds/dollars - try Tandy, RS-Components, Maplins or even a shop that sells hi-fi. Be aware that there are gold-plated cables (miles more expensive!!!) - don't worry about this, I feel the alleged change in music quality is like the Emperor's New Clothes.

Question Is taking apart an AV receiver dangerous?
I have a very vintage Sansui AU-X501 receiver that's having some channels cutting in and out issues as well as pops and crackles when I fiddle with the switches. I am hoping to clean it out with some deoxidizing spray (DeoxIT), but I was wondering if there's any danger of electrostatic discharge when taking the receiver apart. This is a fairly old receiver (circa 1970). Thank you.
Best Answer The power supply capacitors can hold a high voltage charge even when the unit is unplugged. Also, indiscriminately spraying Deoxit around the inside of the receiver won't solve much--The smaller amount of Deoxit you use, the better it works--so long as it's used in the right place.

RCA Vintage Receivers question of the day
Question I want to play my ipod through my vintage receiver...

Question RCA analog audio VS HDMI digital audio?
Ok, inspired by my friend who hooked up a vintage 1980s Fisher amplifier powering 2 vintage loudspeakers and a sub via RCA to mini to his PC. The results audio-wise was phenomenal. Since I have no room for vintage loudspeakers nor have smaller speakers that can match his, I have to resort to a 5.1 consisting of 2 90's Sony Stereo( one pair 200 watts, other 80 watts) speakers, an AWA 100 watt center, and a polk audio psw10 subwoofer, and a 5.1 500 watt channel receiver with HDMI. I wanna know which setup will get better sound quality cause I listen to music, watch videos, and play games mostly, and the PC cover the video quality part, so I'm only worrying about audio quality. Now, should a I get an RCA to mini for each audio input on my integrated soundcard (Cost me about for multiple RCA to mini cables) or should I just get my HDMI cable, stick it in my videocard or monitor, and have surround sound already. I don't mind cable management (I'm very organized with that), I just wanna know which will give me better audio quality coming from my PC
Best Answer Assuming your PC or monitor will output digital sound via the HDMI, that would be the obvious choice. Digital will always give you more faithful reproduction because you don't lose anything in the transmission. You'll need to consult the documentation and setup screens for your monitor, sound card and video card to see it that's the case with your specific equipment. P.S. It would be unusual for a monitor to have hdmi OUTPUT (as opposed to INPUT)
