Simply put: vintage radios are awesome. There is really nothing quite as interesting or fun as using an old am/fm radio, or even a ham radio, that operates on tubes and stuff like that. Even though radio isn’t what it used to be, it can still give you warm feelings of recognition to use them. It kind of makes you feel good sort of like you are at home again after a long time, if you can understand that.
There is so much vintage radio gear out there that it can be mind boggling to find the ones worth buying! But, don’t give up yet. There are a few things to remember that just might help you find exactly what you are looking for, and maybe they can help you avoid getting ripped off in the process!
You really need to decide what era of radio system you are looking for. For instance, are you looking for a pre-1920 radio? Are you especially looking for something specific, like a wireless Marconi set? Are you looking for a tube or valve radio? Are you looking for a crystal set radio? Just how vintage do you want it? Do you want it from the 1920s? From the 1930s-1960s? There are tons of vintage radios out there, and you just have to find the one that is right for your needs.

Some things to remember about buying a radio online are what to ask the seller. Make sure to ask plenty of questions, such as what condition the radio is in, and if anything is damaged or broken. Remember that most tubes can be replaced, but some cosmetic things like knobs and switches will be hard to find. If you are a stickler for purity, than you should probably look for a radio that is in excellent condition. However, if you are willing to live with some cosmetic flaws, than you can focus your search on radios that might have a few cosmetic flaws but that are in great working order. In doing this, you might save a buck and still have a great working vintage radio.
If you know that the radio you are looking for has a missing knob or switch, you might go ahead and search the internet for a replacement to see how much it would cost. Sometimes you can find them reasonable enough, but sometimes hard to find knobs can be outrageously expensive. And always take shipping charges into consideration. Remember that the shipping cost is part of the total cost, so be careful and don’t get ripped due to excessive shipping costs.
Also, unless you are willing to take risks, remember to only buy vintage radios that come with a guarantee. If the seller will not guarantee the radio, then it really isn’t worth your time unless you are willing to save some money in return for some risk. And always ask about the antenna! Is it in good condition, is it bent, is it broken?
